Spain is moving medical cannabis as a processing trade

Spain’s medical cannabis numbers for the first half of 2026 are a trade file, not a patient-count story. Figures from the Spanish Agency of Medicines and Medical Devices, set out by Cannamonitor and reported by International CBC on 25 September, put authorised imports at 25,730 kg and authorised exports at 18,305 kg between January and June. Six months of imports almost matched the 26,883 kg authorised for the whole of 2025. Exports are ahead of last year as well: 18,305 kg already, against 30,589 kg in 2025 and 46,141 kg in 2024.
The shape of the inbound volume is processing. Infarmed’s figures, as Cannamonitor reported them, show Portugal sending 11,386 kg into Spain in the first half — about 44% of Spanish imports — primarily flower crossing the border for processing and sterilisation. AEMPS lists twenty countries of origin and destination. After Portugal, the main trading partners named are Germany, the United Kingdom and Poland.
What that means for a European purchase
That is the positive read for a buyer. Spain is an active EU-GMP processing and movement node between Portuguese supply and German, British and Polish purchase. A load that needs sterilisation, extraction or another European GMP step is riding a corridor that already carries tonnes. Spain also authorised 19.6 tonnes of medical production in 2025, with four commercial growers, four geneticists and nine EU-GMP operators in the field. This is not a pilot.
It is still a medicines file. Narcotics permits, EU-GMP, a licensed importer and a batch certificate of analysis sit on every consignment. Industrial hemp does not travel on this paperwork, and a hospital preparation under last year’s Royal Decree is a separate, slower domestic channel. The tonnes moving now are the trade between licensed operators.
Where Rehemption sits
Rehemption’s job on this corridor is the match. If the product is medical flower or an extract that a Spanish, German or Polish buyer can lawfully receive, we write the specification, the offtake and the movement. If it is industrial hemp, it stays on the agricultural file. Spain’s half-year figures say the medicines trade is open and busy. They do not say every part of the plant can ride that truck.
